Keep
it simple
One or two
syllable names are usually best, try not to go over three. If the name
is long or complicated, it'll be
hard to call out and your dog may not understand. Having to repeat a
dog's name to get his attention
makes training difficult and can be
dangerous in
certain situations
Short
names ending in vowels are easier for your puppy to learn
This is due
to the nature of how people form sentences in the English language. A
name starting with a sharp consonant and
ending in a
vowel will be easiest to pronounce and be most effective with your
puppy. Some
examples are: Bella,
Toby, Chloe, Marco
Avoid names that rhyme with or sound like
obedience commands
The basic
dog obedience commands include sit, stay, come, down, and heel. Fetch
and shake may also be a part of your
obedience
vocabulary.
Consider not
using traditional human names
A good puppy name should be just
that, a puppy's name. By naming your puppy or dog like a person, you
may subconsciously forget that he's, in
fact, a dog. This can increases the tendency to treat our pets like
people
while forgetting that they see the world very differently than we do.
Names
for Registered dogs
AKC
registered puppies and dogs will require two names. The first being the
registered name that will appear on the
registration certificate and
will need to be absolutely unique. It's not uncommon to incorporate
your
family's last name or city of residence
in your dog's registered
name to achieve uniqueness. The second
name is
the name you'll actually
call your dog. You may opt to call your dog a name based on his/her
registered name, but that is entirely
optional. An example would be and
registered name of Lab Haven's Aspen Snowball
Princess with a call name
of Aspen.
